The French Connection

Created by adding 2 metal bands, throes of Dawn 's goal is to create something new in the metal scene, especially the black death one. They had only to release one demo to get attention of several labels. Finally , it was Woodcut Records that signed the band. Then, they issued a promo tape ( under the same name than the album) which get good responses. Then, they recorded their album & create ten songs of black heavy metal , full of melodies & technical parts. I think that Throes of Dawn is surely a band that will create with its first album a great surprise in the black metal scene. for a first album, they succeed in creating a up to the average production. the band is composed of intelligent musicians. they know the richness & weakness of the style of music they choose to play. That's why their music is enriched & strengthen by original arrangements like in the 2d song of their album with a break that could have featured on a folk album or on a progressive rock album. But the powerful side of their music has not been forgotten at all. Good keyboards parts, excellent guitars parts ( full of melodies), a real drummer ( inventive) are elements found in Throes of dawn 's music. Some riffs remains that heavy metal is the basis of their music. Only vocals stay in the black metal range ( except for one or two parts where a clear voice appears) . Because, it's a band composed of good musicians, Throes of Dawn can expect to feature among the best black metal bands for the coming years . It may be one of those that will allow this style to reach a new standard of quality!

Pakkasherra-debyytti on kylmää kamaa aina kansista ja tittelistä sanoituksiin, jotka käsittelevät niitä melko perinteisiä teemoja, kuten surua, elämän merkityksettömyyttä, pohjoisia luonnonolojamme nostattaen tässä ohessa lähes jokaisessa biisissä esiin jollain muotoa tietyn kylmän fiiliksen ja talven.

Musiikillisesti Throes of Dawnin debyytti on jotain dark ja black metallin välimaastoon asettuvaa tunnelmallista ja ei mitään hillittömän nopeaa musiikkia, jossa kitarat yhdessä koskettimien kanssa näyttelevät aika oleellista osaa. Kappaleista löytyy usein rauhallisempia pätkiä hiukan rankemman väännön välissä, jolloin koskettimet erityisesti pääsevät nousemaan esille, kun muulloin kitarat taas ovat enemmän esillä.

Lauluosastokin on ihan vakuuttavaa: Henri Kaamoksen black raakunta on oikeasti hyvä, koskin yksinään saattaisi ruveta pitemmän päälle puuduttamaan. Jani Heinolan puhtaat lauluosuudet ovatkin todella suuri plussa musiikkiin. Erityisesti puhtaat osuudet nousevat esille nuissa aiemmin mainituissa rauhallisemmissa väliosuuksissa tuoden oman tunnelmalisänsä niihin.

Hyviä biisejä levyllä on useampiakin. Aloittava "Across the Loveless Horizon" on jo hyvä biisi ja siitä löytyy heti ne oleellisimmat elementit levyltä, joten tyylistä pääsee heti jyvälle, joskin kappaleen alussa oleva intro on aika kömpelönoloinen. Kakkosbiisissä, "The Night Belongs to Us", on hyvät sanoitukset ja se on aika tunnelmoiva, mutta kolmantena tuleva nimikkobiisi "Pakkasherra" on raaka ja ehdottomasti levyn parhaita biisejä. "Pakkasherra!"-huudossakin on jotain todella 'alkukantaista'! Hyviä ovat myös "Autumn Winds" ja päättävä "Winter Romance".

Levyltä löytyy myös kaksi instrumentaalien nimellä kulkevaa viritystä, joista ensimmäisessä "As a Spirit" on kylläkin sanojakin yhden säkeistön verran ja muutoinkin kyseinen biisi on näistä kahdesta selkeästi parempi. "Cold Goddess" kun meinaa aina ruveta odotuttamaan loppumistaan.

Hyvä levy, joskin hiukan enemmän vaihtelua olisi tehnyt hyvää. Myös hiukkasen heikkolaatuiset saundit loivat vähän puuduttavaa fiilistä.

Soundscape

This is a pretty cool Heavy Black Death Metal band that has some real interesting and powerful music to offer, even if they have not totally re-invented the wheel. Most of the music have and pretty melodic basis that mix some of the older Heavy Metal twists and riffing with much more modern, European-like melodies and arrangements. The sound is very good and very well mixed, well above average for the genre. The guitars are skillful and played with precision. Some very nice guitar leads can also be heard. Its sound is pretty clean, although maybe a little bit too low in the mix during the heavier parts... But that is not a major point by any mean. The bass is loud, smooth and fills in the guitar and synths admirably. It actually is a very preeminent instrument, often louder than the guitars themselves. The synths are pretty present but never annoying. Just the right dosage. The vocals are in the pure Black Metal vein; totally high pitched growls and screams, very extreme. The overall result is quite satisfactory and full of melody mixed with some more aggressive Death-like parts. Will appeal to a wide range of underground Metal fans!

Technical Death/Black metal or is it Frost Metal? The production should have been better to give the music justice in my opinion. It's mostly mid tempo, but there are some faster and some slower parts with nice keyboards and normal vocals instead of the ordinary grim ones. The lyrics reminds much of Immortals usual stuff (you know: winter, moon, wolves, cold, black, night and such words being essensial main theme). the songs has some good old heavy metal solos á la Iron Maiden, which are good, but do they really fit this music? At parts it's slow and soft, reminding heavily of AOR (I'm not kidding), but mostly it's harsh and brutal. What else can i say? It's a bit uneven, especially since this Finish band can't seem to agree on a specific genre of music. They have created a good and original album, and with some development and hard work they can become very good in the future.

Damnedlist (FRA)

The Zodiac

Here's a nice release from the Finnish band Throes of Dawn. This Cd contains ten tracks of well played Black/Heavy Metal. The musical skill of the members is quite good, at least they don't have any problems with going to fast riffs to slow melodic parts. The singer has no troubles delivering some really good screamy vocals. Not only are the vocals sung with a deep scary voice, but you also get some really nice "normal" vocals. I'm sure we will see more of this band in the future.
