Throes of Dawn have recently relesed their Second album "Dreams of the Black Earth". Hello, who will be answering this Interview? And how are you doing? -This is Henri Kaamos, the vocalist. I´m doing quite fine actually. Just heard that the german Deftone mag. has ranked our "Dreams of the Black Earth" CD as 2 in their soundcheck. So, nothing to complain about. I really liked "Dreams of the Black Earth". What do you think about the album, are you satisfied? -I am very pleased with it. Actually, I was surprised when I heard the music first time. I could nerver even imagine that everything would turn out like it did. The soundquality is very impressing. We have had only positive feedback from the album. You recorded the album in the "Tico-Tico Studio". I have never heard of it, is it something special about it? What did you think about it and the staff of the studio? -You haven´t heard of Tico-Tico? Well, all Impaled Nazarene albums have been recorded there. Also The Serpent, ...And Oceans, Enochian Crecent etc have recorded there, it´s like the finnish Abyss. Very famous and talented metal studio. The studio engineer Ahti Kortelainen did awesome job for the sounds, he really wanted to make supreme sounds for us. We are going to use Tico-Tico in the future, recordings of the third album will start in summer -99... What is the biggest inspiration source for you / Throes of Dawn? -The biggest? I don´t know if I can name just one... Well, lyrically I would say Nature, Misanthropy and the surrounding world as I see it. There are also lyrics that base on emotions and dreams. I would say that "Dreams of the Black Earth" is basically about despising mankind. Three Words: Three Answers: Sweden Icehockey Alko Sentenced Estonia Wasa King Are any of the members involved in any other projects or in the undergroud? -Toni and Teemu have a psychedelic fusion jazz project, I don´t know if it has a name, but I was very surprised when I first heard their tape, it´s very bizarre. But Throes of Dawn is a band number one for every member. Can you tell me something about the present line-up? Has it changed since Throes of Dawn was founded? -No, we have had the same line-up since -94. Each member is quite dedicated to the band. We have had some problems, mostly because of the military services. Everyone has been in the army, only Teemu is still there, and that´s why he can´t play on the third album. The drummer from Enochian Crescent will replace him in the studio. And the line-up is: Henri Kaamos - vocals Jani Heinola - guitars, synths Toni Jokinen - lead guitar Matti Suomela - bass Teemu Jokinen - drums What do you think about Woodcut Records? Have they been helpful and all that shit? -Yes, Woodcut has worked really hard for us. Especially now, when promoting this "Dream of the Black Earth" album. It´s easy to work with Woodcut Records as it is a local label, if something comes up, you can always visit there. It would be difficult to communicate with some foreign label, to make long distance calls, and send faxes. You wouldn´t know how much they rip you off. When the contract with Woodcut expires, do you think that Throes of Dawn will sign a new contract with Woodcut, or...? -Well, our two album deal with Woodcut is over. But it seems that, we are going to record our third album for them. They offered us a deal which we can´t refuse. We tried to get a deal from some other label with "Dreams...", but believe me, only few were interested. And their offers couldn´t match the one we got from Woodcut. We don´t necessarily want to sign some mega-label, the size of the company is not so important. The honesty and their commitment to the band is the most important thing. If you had to live in South Africa together with a black women with hand-tits for 1 year, and you could only bring 3 things. What 3 things would it be? -Oh... Probibly I would take a virtual helmet, RK-62 and one year supply of Viagra. So, you have played live with Satyricon. How was it to play with such metal giants? -It was a great honour to play with them. Satyricon has always been one of my favourites. Satyr and Frost are great persons, who stand firmly behind their words. They don´t act as some idiots, who begin to act as rock stars after they get some name with their band. Have you had any big gigs since that gig? -No, we haven´t had a gig since that. That´s because of the military services... but we are now going to change the situation -We have been planning a small tour in Finland with ...And Oceans, during the spring. We just need to find a talented session synth player. Can you make a top 5 of the best records of 1998? Hmmm... not in any order: Gehenna - Adimiron Black Carpathian Forest - Black Shining Leather Unholy - Rapture Katatonia - Discouoraged Ones Therion - Vovin (Dödheimsgard - Satanic Art) What did you think about the black metal scene 1998? And how do you think it will develop under 1998? More brutal primitive Black or more keyboards and melodical? -It seems that bands are trying to find more personal sounds and styles, than the usal Black Metal way. I think that´s good, otherwise the whole scene would die away. I just fucking love the Dödheimsgard´s Satanic Art, MCD. It´s so brilliant and perverted. Probably, this development in Black Metal will continue in -99, the bands try to bring something new and fresh to the scene. If you have something you want the public to know, say it now! (Even if it is a confesion that you believe in God or something) -You might never believe this, but the music in "Dreams..." was composed and rehearsed in 3 weeks! "The Weeper" was never rehearsed...
